Started in 2012 by David Alexander Bullock, the Crusade for America movement is a movement to defend our freedoms. Poverty, racial injustice, violence, unfettered economic power all jeopardize the fulfillment of human freedom. With more than 48 million Americans food insecure and a rising culture of violence, our public policy and political life has decayed. It no longer provides a level playing field for the American WORKER, the American STUDENT, the American CITIZEN, and the American CITY. Our politics has stacked the deck against our own interests. We MUST fight back. Crusade for America is a movement to mobilize around an agenda to change the political, social, and economic life of America. Crusade for America is ultimately a crusade for the world with multiple campaigns under it ran by the Change Agent Consortium.
Currently Detroit has over 40,000 properties under its control and management. The growth of abandonment has been a direct result of urban sprawl and a greater concentration of poverty in Detroit. The expansion of the highway has accelerated the flight of middle of class families, and jobs. The lack of jobs and public safety has also contributed to the growth of abandonment in Detroit. Over 60% of Detroiter's are reliant on public transportation for work, school or shopping. CAC is working with local churches to identify abandoned houses in their neighborhoods so that they may work with city officials to either purchase or demolish the houses. With the growing need to stabilize the neighborhoods around our churches, we are working to create a Community Development Corporation to work with churches on buying and rehabbing houses around their churches. A few CAC members are in the process of converting homes they purchased into halfway homes and transitional living. CAC has applied for CDC status to begin identifying resources available to accomplish this task.
Rock the Vote Initiatives
Under Crusade for America, David Alexander Bullock led grassroots voter turnout initiatives across the country. Under the Rock the Vote initiatives of Crusade for America voter ID laws in Pennsylvania and Michigan were fought. Crusade for America also was key in the Detroit City Clerk opening several community college locations and the Department of Elections for early absentee voting. The Rock the Vote initiatives were a push to drive citizens to be engaged and educated upon voting. We responded and continue to respond to what we believe is a national movement to suppress the minority vote, the vote of seniors and the vote of students. Our message is really a voter empowerment message; it’s more than registration, it’s voter activation!
Community Wealth Building
In the last several decades many cities have experiencd distress at a catapulted level. Many cities have endured mass exodus, loss of capital and jobs, dwindling city services, and endmeic poverty. Before the most recent recession Detroit had a poverty rate of 33.8 percent, Cleveland 29.5 percent, and Buffalo 28.7 percent. Community wealth building is a comprehensive approach to urban economic redevelopment. This form of development puts wealth i the hands of locally anchored forms of business enterprise and not simply corporations. These anchored businesses invest in the neighborhoods in which they are housed - building wealth in asset poor communities. In Detroit we intend to make citizens be seen as the most important asset in the city. Through community wealth building we create an organized network for communication, advocacy, and economic empowerment. Through this arm of Crusade for America we build an economic ground game and are creating our own CDFI/CDE for Detroit citizens.
Stop the Violence
The Stop the Violence platform of Crusade for America is a response to the senseless violence occuring in urban centers around America. With 10 people killed and over 40 shot in Chicago during Memorial Day weekend of 2012, Crusade for America sought to shine a light on the senseless gun violence occuring in Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Boston, Camden, and other urban areas. This initiative is a call to STOP THE VIOLENCE and SAVE THE CHILDREN! Under the Stop the Violence umbrella of Crusade for America citizens are encourage to address the underling systemic issues that contribute to the rising tide of violence in their communities. Under this campaign prayer vigils were held across the country at local gun shops and outside of movie theatres in light of the Dark Knight Rises massacre.
