Community Based Grocery Store Campaign
The main objective of this project will be developing community based model grocery store in Detroit that will be affiliated with a food workers guild. We are working to secure state and federal funds to build a small 15,000 to 20,000 grocery store in Detroit. This campaign has brought together 3 segments of Detroit that have not worked together in past. We have secured relationships with labor unions, a grocery store trade association and area ministers to work together around the common goal of creating economic development that works and makes a profit in Detroit. The challenges we are organizing to overcome are lack of access to capital, public safety and the perception that Detroit is a food desert. As of today we have secured relationship with the following federal departments to secure technical assistance on financing programs: Department of Agriculture, Department of Treasury, and Department of Health and Human Services.
